Dopiaza curry in a bowl — caramelised-onion British Indian restaurant-style curry

Dopiaza is a savoury, onion-rich curry with roots in South Asian cooking and a long-standing place on British Indian restaurant menus. It is known for its generous use of onions, gentle warmth and deeply comforting flavour.

Our version is inspired by the British Indian restaurant style: a slow-cooked onion and tomato sauce layered with coriander, cumin, garlic, ginger, garam masala and extra onions cooked into the final curry.

The result is a curry with deep savoury flavour, mellow spice and a rich onion-led sauce. It works beautifully with chicken, lamb, paneer or vegetables.

Dopiaza recipe card

You will need:

  • 400–500g Chicken, Lamb, Paneer or Veg
  • 2 large onions (or 4 smaller)
  • 1 x 400g tin tomatoes
  • Rice, Naan or Chips to serve
  • Optional: fresh coriander

Ingredients

Sachet 1 — Base Spice Mix

Ground coriander, ground cumin, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder, ginger powder, crushed fenugreek leaves, tomato powder, ground black pepper, salt.

Sachet 2 — Dopiaza Finishing Spice Mix

Garam masala, ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika, mango powder / amchur, ground cinnamon, ground cardamom, mild chilli powder, ground cloves.
